Tell me something that I don't know #9

What information would you use from someone from a different culture or country than your own if you were creating a radio station?

  1. To obtain a diversified amount of listeners from different cultures I would want to know what type of music is popular in their country. Also, there could be quizzes and fun games to play that would connect all listeners from all countries. I would want the information on how I could get them to listen to my radio station rather than others. What would make you listen to my station above all else? That would be one of my important questions to ask.

  2. I want to know whether the contents in the site are valuable or not. The demands are diversified. In other words, it depends on the culture what does he or she wants to know. I use the difference between American and Japanese web sites as an example. I felt American websites less likely to write many sentences while Japanese write many contents on the page. I am Japanese and have Japanese perspective. When I wanted to know Disney resort since I planned to visit there, I used both American original page and Japanese page. When I looked at the American version, I could not get any information that I wanted. However, Japanese site, which is for Japanese tourists, have every contents that I needed. I felt while American page focuses on the impact using wonderful pictures, Japanese one tends to explain the details using words because Japanese character are uncertainly avoidance. Therefore, for me, American one was just the collection of great pictures. Like my personal experience, the things that person wants to know are different. I want to avoid that my website will be meaningless. That is why I would like to know what kinds of information people need on this webpage.

  3. To include those from different countries, I would find out what type of music they liked, what they listened to, certain songs, certain playlists, and much more to help incorporate what they like into a radio station. Surveys and contests would be a good way to get more listeners to easily find out about what they would like more out of a radio station.

  4. I would first include music from their countires. I may even incorporate an international student to be DeeJay for a day. We could have different international students come in once a week and play music that they love. We could also do contests.

  5. I would use their musical preferences and different uses. I would try to integrate or find similarities in their personal choices in order to relate them to the music we have here. I could find music that stood on the borderline between being fully in another language, and still acceptable in American culture. ( Some musical artists have the same songs sung in different languages in order to satisfy both parties of viewers of movies or games >> US:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0DII2nHoZM JAP:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWoJLdXJt0E

  6. I like Ashley's idea about using an international student as a deejay. Also, I would not look exclusively at music, but other programming as well. Conducting surveys and getting a good idea of the demographics of potential listeners would be important to consider as well.

  7. When creating a radio station, the most important thing is content. A radio station plays music but it also has news and talk shows. People from different cultures would like to here news on a global scale instead of a local scale. Music is another thing that should be more on a global scale instead of just what is popular here. One possible solution would be to have different international students select songs to mix in with the popular music from here.

  8. If I were creating a radio station I would like to know the popular music in other countries as well as the most relevant content to them. I want them to be interested in the music as well as the talk shows and news aired.

  9. I would first learn about their culture i.e. holidays, current popular music ect. then build a playlist leaning towards them but at the same time playing music that they like here in the US. I would also send out surveys to find out what they like to listen to i.e. rock, rap, country ect.

  10. I think knowing mainstream music from other countries would be very beneficial as well as letting the people from other countries be able to share their music with people from different places. We can all share and learn about different music and culture. It would be nice to not only listen to music but also be educated by it. I also think knowing important dates like Adam said would be great so they feel that we are connected in that way.

I would want to know what music is popular, what is important in their respective cultures, and what kind of content they would want, be it news, sports or otherwise.

  12. Find out what the music trends from their respective country or culture. Ask questions about those trends. Why is it popular? Is there something similar in your own country/culture that you can compare it too? What about alternatives to music. News? Talk radio? Radio dramas? There are a wide variety of questions to ask about content when trying to diversify in this manner.

  13. I think if i'm basing myself out of the U.S. then I would love to know what music is popular to them and find patterns but also find what american songs are relevant to them. I wouldn't only limit myself to songs but to see what American artists are popular for them and why. That's what I would care for, just music, from locally to globally.

  14. I would use their first impressions of the site visually. I would want to know where their eyes are drawn to, what is most visually appealing and what may seem confusing or jumbled to them. I would not want them to give me their opinion on content because the radio station would have an audience geared towards the local area and not a world-wide market.

  15. I would first evaluate what songs are most popular in different countries, and find out when is the highest amount of listeners. By playing the most popular songs at the most listened times, the listeners may be more inclined to listen at other times too since so often their favorite songs are playing. I would also implement open calls on the radio station for people to call in, send the radio station comments on the website or use social media of a way of voicing their opinions.

  16. Evaluate radio station websites from other countries that are online, and look at differences between them and local radio stations webpages. It would be hard to look at their content unless you are fluent in that countries language, but looking at their designs could be beneficial.

  17. I would use online radio stations from other countries as a frame of reference. I would research what popular songs, artists, and bands are in the country or culture that I'm trying to reach. I would also ask for feedback from individuals familiar with or from the country I'm trying to reach. I would also be mindful of the design/layout of my radio station website making sure that even the color choices and logos reflected the culture and that it would be easy to navigate.

  18. I would use their help to evaluate how understandable the website is. Perhaps certain icons are only understandable within American culture, maybe also to included popular artists from their country instead of making everything Americanized. Also it would be helpful in order to avoid things that might be considered offensive in different cultures that I may not find offensive.
