Tell Me Something that IDK #3

In the world of the internet and new media, things are always going "viral." Define VIRAL in your own terms.

Find a positive example of something going viral and a negative example of something going viral. PLEASE ADD THE URL. Plan to show it.

  1. My definition of something going viral is a statement, video, or some other form of media that is shared throughout the different spectrums of the social media. It is seen by many people in a very short period of time, and in many instances seen by people all over the world.
A negative example (although some folks would find this to be a positive example) would be Miley Cyrus performing her twerking act and whatnot on MTV. This went viral quickly -- it was talked about, tweeted about, shared on Youtube and every other site where videos can be uploaded and shared. Several months later and people are still talking about it. Thanks to Miley Cyrus, the man in Utah who lives in a cave and makes fires by rubbing two stones together knows what twerking is.
A positive example would be the pilot who landed the plane in the hudson (Sullenberger) and managed to save the lives on board the plane by doing so. Someone captured a picture of the plane in the river and tweeted it -- the picture quickly went viral, and this is the picture that is credited with putting Twitter on the map of social networking.

Below is a picture of each example that was shown, shared, and talked about exhaustively over the period of several weeks -- WARNING, the 2nd pic is a bit....well, PG-13

  2. My definition of viral is something that is shared in a video, picture, and/or statement that becomes immensely popular in a very short about of time.

Positive Example: meme. They are short and quick to make, but they can point out some of societies problems. An example is the Willy Wonka gun control meme.

Negative Example: Justin Bieber's downward spiral. This is an example of going viral. As soon as it was publicly known that Justin Bieber went to jail, his mugshot blew up over the internet.

    Positive Example: http://thefacesofguncontrol.wordpress.com/2012/12/03/27/gun-control-sarcastic-willy-wonka/

Viral is something being shared amongst the massdes usually via the internet.

A positive viral image is the keep calm and ... photos or phrases. It is a positive message that a large amount of people have heard or seen, making it viral.

Http://youtu.be/cqQWkB0kn9 the masses know of the phrase or image, that's is usually positive. Like this "keep clam and stay positivehttps://www.google.com/search?client=tablet-android-google&biw=800&bih=845&site=webhp&tbm=isch&ei=93D6UtuTC-66yAH-9IGQCA&oq=positive+&gs_l=img.3..0l10.4508.6271.0.7616.11.11.0.0.0.1.116.1076.5j6.11.0....0...1c.1.35.img..4.7.701.RHbDnOKfrd4&q=positive#biv=i%7C3%3Bd%7Ce2Wox5D2GVFbBM%3A

A negative viral might be this video where an entertainment news anchor confuses samual Jackson as another actor. It is negative especially for this news anchors career. http://youtu.be/cqQWkB0kn9Y

  4. My definition of going viral is some form of media that has spread across the world wide web to anybody who is able to view it.

A positive form of media that went viral could be a video such as the Harlem Shake. It brings together people with common interests allows people to share the videos for comedic purposes. The Harlem Shake is one of many videos that caught the eye of many viewers for self entertainment and inspired people to make videos of that sort on their own.

Things that go viral that are negative have both positive and negative aspects to it. A lot of viral pictures and videos that are seen as negative are still used for comedic purposes whether targeting a single person or a group. It is negative because it IS targeting people and I'm assuming hurting them with hurtful comments that can be said. You can easily tell if something is a "good or bad" type of viral by the things that people say, such as in the music video "Friday" by Rebecca Black. Her music video has 1,297, 831 dislikes. Some comments include, "Man that hurts my ears" and "Why do you sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks?"

  5. My definition of viral is the influence on the society. The information on the Internet is now spread easily and quickly like virus. The impact is sometimes very huge even it brings an effect on people all over the world. The positive example of viral is that marketing strategy. Since the impact of the Internet is very huge, many companies aim at the word of mouth. One of the famous companies called Nestle had great success to sell the KitKat in Japan. This business focuses on the name of product, KitKat. It is because the pronunciation of Japanese words, kittokatsu, which means surely success, sounds quite similar to this good’s name, Nestle started the campaign to sell a lot of KitKat during entrance exam season. This idea was spread through the Internet by the word of mouth gradually, and now, it is a kind of general knowledge to give KitKat the person who is about to take the exam in Japan. On the other hand, the negative side of this term is the bullying on the Internet, not in the real world. It is one of the serious issue recently. One person began to write something bad about the particular person, the other also do same things. The cyberbullying looks similar to the virus. It is hard to top and delete them once they start to breed.

  6. My definition of something going viral is when something is put via the internet or social media and it is quickly shared and then shared again. Once something is out there whether it be positive or negative it is out there for good.

A positive example is of a two year old boy hearing his mother's voice for the first time. This is a great example of something going from just a few likes to over a million in just a few short minutes.

A negative one would be of a fedex worker throwing a package, which happened to be a computer monitor, over a fence and being caught on camara. All he had to do was ring the bell and then man whom already had his front door opened would have gladly let him in. Needless to say I don't think this man had his job after this.

These things are hard to get rid of and once they start they don't stop.

  7. I would define "viral" as something that is instantly spread across the internet within hours. I'ts continuously shared and re-posted and is known and available worldwide.

    A positive example:
"Mr. Mom" a dad who has changed the perspective of fatherhood. He posted a photo of himself holding his baby while fixing his other daughter's hair. The man, Doyin Richards, wants to inspire other father's to feel man enough to do women's work.
    http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/super-dad-photo-viral-21486351

    A negative example:
A bad review from a customer at restaurant in the Bladebone Inn raging over how horrible the food and service was. The owner and chef comment bag in what becomes an online disputer for everyone to read about. The way the owner and chef comment back is plain arrogance. It shows stupidity. Everyone has their own opinions and acting back shows immaturity. It's one customer, let them pass by.

  8. A viral video is easy to compare to a virus only instead of the flu it is something people actively share with one another for amusement or information. Viral videos are very popular and typically don't have an extremely long shelf life unless they become a meme.
A positive example of a viral video is Keenan Cahill a young man who began lip singing for fun and uploading the videos to youtube who ended up being able to meet a famous rapper just because of how popular his videos were.
    http://youtu.be/Dwimc4cvUmQ
    A negative example:
This particular example is a bit difficult to define because it has both a negative and a positive side. Lizzie Velasquez turned a viral video used against her into a challenge to end bullying and become a stronger woman. However the original video, which I believe was removed, called her the ugliest woman in the world. People posted comments about her saying "Burn it, burn it with fire".

  9. A viral video is a video that is quickly shared throughout the internet, most of the time through social media. Some videos are a positive viral video which means good results are the outcome of the video going viral. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxemss0NDt8

Nathan Mitcham is a special needs student in Owasso, Oklahoma. As an 18 year old he has never played in a high school basketball game. With a comfortable lead, Owasso's head coach sent in Nathan, and the crowd erupted. He scored 8 points with two three-pointers. A twitter campaign/hashtag went viral with the help of Blake Shelton, Kevin Durant, Carrie Underwood, Johnny Manziel, Oprah and many more.

There are also negative examples of viral videos. People will cyberbully people via videos, and for some insane reason everyone enjoys watching it.

  10. "Viral" can refer to any image, website, advertisement, etc. that spreads rapidly via the internet.

A negative example could be a beached sperm whale exploding, although it could be considered educational (warning: graphic) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vx1OVLX5Rc

A positive example, after viewing a potentially disturbing sperm whale exploding, could be 25 minutes worth of 6-second funny cat clips - to take your mind off of the whale and/or make your day better - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tzhyfWHdLo

  11. Apparently I put the wrong link - but the one I did provide is still capable of making your day "positive". It's a compilation video of animals being jerks.

  12. To me something that is "viral" is impactful enough to be shared widely via social media.
A positive example of something that has gone viral is the Dove Evolution video. This video shows an average looking woman being transformed into a flawless cover model. They show as she is smothered in makeup and then digitally edited until she looks "beautiful." This shows women that the girls they see in magazines or billboards don't actually look that way in real life, so they don't have to either.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U
A negative example of something gone viral is the video of three black students beating a white student on a school bus. This video got alot of media attention. Clearly, this issue needed to be dealt with. But allowing something like this to go viral might encourage this behavior.

  13. When something goes viral, everyone sees it or hears about it.
A positive example would be funny videos like the bride getting kissed by the elephant.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTvUV-qlnGk

A negative example would be videos like this one:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl1ujzRidmU
where a dad shoots his daughters laptop. It embarrassed the kid, it made the family look bad, and the world saw it. At last check, it had almost 39 million views and counting.

  14. Something going viral to me is something that gets to everyone on social media and could delve into television and radio.

Positive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAJYk1jOhzk This is an example of a positive viral video. This video is a cover of Let It Go from the musical disney movie frozen. It shows a childrens choir and an african tribal choir coming together to make this awesome piece of music that went viral on youtube with over 12 Million views. I for one have watched it about 10 times.

    Negative: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc
Leave Britney alone is 6 years old now but at the time it caused quite the controversy. It was a dedicated trans male man in defense of Britneys actions and through him defending her he got his load of hate comments, especially since people werent as accepting of transgendered people six years ago.

  15. To me, viral means a video, news piece, information that is circulated rapidly throughout all forms of media.

Positive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc This is an example of a positive viral video. Invisible Children was released in March 2012 in the efforts to increase US involvement to arrest Joseph Kony, the leader of Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) infamous for his crimes against humanity, particularly for kidnapping and abducting children to turn them into child soldiers and sex slaves. Almost 100 million people have viewed this video and a poll suggested that more than half of young adult Americans heard about Kony 2012 in the days following the video's release. In 2013, U.S. Special Forces began their efforts to help track and locate Kony last year. The U.S. government has offered $5 million for information leading to Kony's capture.

Negative: http://mashable.com/2012/05/10/time-breastfeeding-cover-twitter/ This controversial article was publish in Time Magazine. The cover shows Jamie Lynne Grumet, a slim blonde 26-year-old California mom, breastfeeding her 3-year-old son.

  16. Viral to me means something that has cultural relevant content that can be appreciated by a large audience, that spreads through numerous medians.

    Good example - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg
    Bad example - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U-Z1fZ9F3s

  17. Posting this for the third time now, hope it sticks.

Viral to me means something that has spread rapidly throughout the internet or wireless universe and has been found or promoted by the masses to be spread around to different social groups across the world.

A good example of something that went Viral is the 2013 Hit " What Does the Fox Say?" http://youtu.be/jofNR_WkoCE

A Bad Example of a something that went viral and burned out would be Flappy Bird, Which the Developer took down after receiving hordes of angry feedback. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flappy_Bird

  18. Something going "viral" means, to me at least, that a concept, idea, or statement is almost instantly shared throughout the entire web and anyone who has access to the web almost can't help but be exposed to the "viral epidemic".

Positive- Invisible Children worked on a short film to make the mass population aware of Joseph Kony's tyranny in Africa and to give them an chance to participate in the movement to stop him.
    http://youtu.be/Y4MnpzG5Sqc

Negative: Jason Russell, the film maker and the face of Invisible Children was caught in the nude and a fit of hysteria after recent success of his STOP KONY film. As a result, this meltdown destroyed the Kony movement

  19. Viral, to mean, means that something is shared at an exponential rate that a person will eventually be subjected to it in one form or another.

Instead of positives or negatives, I'll go with two grey areas.

Project Chanology: An organized movement to 'troll' the Church of Scientology by the group Anonymous. Originally started in response to the Church censoring an embarrassing Youtube video, Project Chanology finally drew large public attention to Anonymous. What started as a simply being a massive inconvenience to the Church ended up becoming a legitimate protest that brought to light many questionable practices. Of course, Anonymous has their own questionable practices and history.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCbKv9yiLiQ

KONY 2012: The Kony movement went as almost quickly as it came. People where swept up in the frenzy about a short film about the atrocities of Kony. However, many of the facts from the video where distorted, outdated, or untrue. The frenzy of goodwill was blind, however, as people shared the video, merchandise, flyers and stickers. KONY 2012 supporters had good intentions to be sure, but it's questionable how much the slacktivism and Invisible Children accomplished.
