  1. The statement, "mass media has changed a globe into a village" made by Marshal McLuhan could never be more true than it is today. As noted in the textbook on page 72 where it reads, "As McLuhan noticed, new technologies in the 19th and 20th centuries continued to facilitate these kinds of "extensions" usually either across space or time, primarily, not both."

This statement was made in reference to the technology of the time well before the medium of social media, blogging, youtube, etc. Where before telephone to connect the globe through space but not time and where the photograph could connect through time but not necessarily through space, the new new media revolution has completely brought the abilities of both mediums together, fulling bringing McLuhan's words to realization.

  2. I agree with his statement. McLuhan said that new technologies were "space binding" and "time binding," (Levinson 2011). What he was referring to was pictures, telegraph, and the telephone. Now when we think of what he said, we think of the internet. It sums up the internet because it consists of pictures and high speed information transmission. This allows people to connect globally online. Mass media has changed into a global village like McLuhan said.

  3. Marshall McLuhan undoubtedly predicted the future when it came to new media. Levinson refers to McLuhan in chapter 8 in the section "McLuhan as Microblogger". Levinson shows that McLuhan had earlier written about blogging as "Schizophrenia may be a necessary consequence of literacy". This quote is mostly referring to the success of Twitter and blogging, which in turn has brought together the distant ends of the earth to one global village.
Levinson refers to McLuhan's "tetrad" model which explains the media's "effects". "Every new medium 'amplifies' aspects of our communication (radio, for example, amplifies sound across distance). 'obsolesces' a currently widespread form (radio took the place of some reading),...regarding Twitter, we could say it amplifies the short written phrase, obsolesces long blogs and phone calls, retrieves poetic phrases and McLuhan's writing, and reverses into..."
McLuhan was correct in saying mass media has turned the globe into a village because mass media has removed geographic isolation and brought people instantaneously together. McLuhan wrote this before there was even e-mail and we can see the measurements of the earth shrinking. We can share our voice with millions through the use of new media such as Twitter, as Levinson has discussed.

  4. I believe this global village statement made by McLuhan is extremely true. Due to modern technology and especially the world wide web, we are able to connect with the entire outside world instantly. Mass media has virtually eliminated time and space in the communication aspect of our lives. I believe that McLuhan knew something major was going to happen in terms of our communication when he made the "global village" prediction in "The Gutenberg Galaxy" in 1962. His insight by today's standards have been realized to their maximum potential where connecting with one another even when we're oceans apart is just a click of a button away.

  5. After first reading this statement by McLuhan, it made me think more about it and how true it is. On page 141, the page talks about his book "The Gutenberg Galaxy" and the 107 "twitters" in there that recreates the world into a global village. He saw the future correctly because now Skype, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, E-mails - Internet has made this ginormous world into an interconnecting village.
