after watching "The Lawnmower Man"

Relate current trends in VR or technology to examples from the 1992 movie, The Lawnmower Man, or the lecture on the history of VR.

Two to three  paragraphs.

  1. In Lawnmower Man, virtual reality takes over the character. Virtual reality in games such as Second Life, have also taken over people. I saw a documentary in which a musician had created herself in Second Life. In this virtual reality she had fans of her original music and played concerts. She was not able to do this in real life.
Currently with the extreme popularity of social networking and its easy accessibility through cell phones, virtual reality is in the palm of our hand. Facebook is like a virtual reality because each person has a profile and “friends”. The amount of time spent on Facebook has also taken over some people’s character and they may now live through Facebook or Second Life.
The media overload that had been seen in Lawnmower Man, had affected the personality and physical capabilities of Job. Although it was extreme in the movie, I think that the virtual realities of examples such as Facebook and Second Life, also affect people physically. The attention span may be slightly affected because it is shorter by always having instant access to the sites. In addition people spend such an extreme amount of time on these sites, could affect their sense of actual reality.

  2. In the movie Lawnmower Man, Job is put into a Virtual Reality as an experiment. He is able to go from the VR to real world, and in the process becomes a smarter individual. As time passes, however, he loses sight of what is virtual, and what is actually real, and eventually unable to function in society.
I can see this trend happen in today's world in frightening numbers. People spend all of their time in virtual realities, and then are unable to function outside of it. Their personality is totally different off of the computer as opposed to who they are behind the screen. And in most cases, the time spent in an alternate reality has negative effects, such as social awkwardness and obesity, that can hurt a person's actual life.

  3. In film The Lawnmower Man, a virtual reality creates a more impressive Job. This sort of thing is what virtual reality is all about. You can finally become your own answer to question, "What would you rather be?" Job became a more impressive person. Such trends as facebook allow one to become anyone they want really. There are limitless possibilities in a blank "About Me" space. Video games also allow one to become more impressive and do things they could never do themselves. Players of "Modern Warfare" may be quite impressive soldiers online but in reality they spend most of their time in front of a screen wishing they could do those things. With enough screen time, one starts to forget that they are not in actuality a super soldier and their first instinct when threatened may be different because of this.

  4. In The Lawnmower Man, the characters put themselves into video games and virtual environments. This reminds me of the trends and advancements of motion sensors and motion technology to put the player in the game. The Nintendo Wii uses a sensor bar to capture the movement of the controller used by the players and simulates the movement on the players avatar, also known as the “Mii”.
Microsoft and Playstation are also making their second attempts into motional technology in video games. Microsoft has introduced the “Kinect”, a camera that simulates the actions, movements, and commands from the user. Playstation introduced the “Move”, a controller similar to the Wii remote that can be used inside a controller to create a simulation in the players home.

  5. In class, our lecture focused on virtual reality: how it has changed throughout time, and it's impact on society. One good example that was presented in class was Second life, an online virtual reality game that allows an user to create an avatar and practically live another life in the game. I can see why one would be drawn to this game: it brings fantasy to life.

Today's society is addicted to technology.Virtual reality is something mostly everyone has been involved with. Everyday people are trying to make virtual reality games better than the existing ones. What's new is "in", so whenever a new game is created, it's bound to be "in". It's scary to see kids and teens so absorbed in their games. Many spend hours on their game systems or computers just gaming away. Virtual reality will always be a trend that's "in" as long as there are people out there who desire to take virtual reality to the next level.

  6. Virtual Reality is depicted as a mind-altering, power-inducing industry that causes a man named Job to not only become a smarter, more competent person – but also a troubled man with the ability to use powers never before possible. The introduction of VR to Job actually changed his brain to act in a completely different way.
Although this is an exaggerated portrayal, it is still true to some extent. Since the introduction of this technology, it HAS changed the way people think and act. Thousands of jobs have been introduced since its creation. People have an entirely new way of communicating and socializing without even leaving their homes. Virtual reality is a great source of entertainment. It has been made into games such as Neopets, The Sims, and Secondlife. It gives people a chance to create an entirely new alter-ego to interact with others. Not only is it entertaining, but it has also given people a new business aspect. Businesses now have a new and powerful outlet of advertisement and exposure. Companies hold promotions inside virtual realities and, in some cases, people actually hold their REAL job inside a virtual reality to make a living.
To sum up, virtual reality has impacted society in a great way. Kids are now growing up with virtual realities as a common means of communication and entertainment. The Lawnmower Man may depict it as controlling and self-damaging, but it is accurate about one thing – it is changing each and every one of us individually and evolving society as a whole.

  7. We saw a more impressive and intelligent Job created from the VR game Pierce Brosnan's character created in Lawnmower Man. The draw to living in an alternate world or being a different person appeals to so many people because as they say, the grass is always greener on the other side. So while we should be happy with who we are and what we have, we're always going to want more or to be someone else in life.
Because of this, we hide behind our internet profiles and create a different person other than ourselves for people to view. And why shouldn't we? So many people who are looking to hire someone will go out on the internet and look up their potential new employee just to see if they've done wrong in their life. Of course you don't want the drunken pictures of yourself from last Friday plastered all over your Facebook for your potential employer to see. So we hide it, we change it and create our own alternate life.
Games such as Second Life, The Sims, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and sites like imvu.com and the like contribute to this VR as well and probably moreso than our Facebooks and "about me"s on other profiles. Even movies contribute to this change of VR being present-look at the movie Avatar. The main character creates a different world where he can use his legs he couldn't normally use and then gives up his real life for the alternative life he created and was happier in.
Basically, VR is always going to be around us so long as we have the technology and the desire to see the greener grass on the other side of that fence.

  8. In the Lawnmower man, Job's life is consumed by Virtual Reality. He is able to better himself and even develops psychic powers that completely alter his life. He goes on a killing spree and kills anyone that has hurt him previously.
Though the Virtual Reality games today such as World of Warcraft, Secondlife, Farmville, and the numerous games on Facebook, don't deliver psychic powers, they have altered people's lives to the point that they have killed. There are multiple cases where people have murdered others in real life because of something that happened in the virtual realm. Obviously not everyone retreats that deeply into the virtual realm and despite those cases, Virtual Reality has many positives that were not shown in the film.
Jobs have been created and some people are even making their living in the virtual realm. I foresee VR being around for a very long time and improving its technology in the future.

  9. The 1980’s movie “Lawnmower Man” shows the possibilities that technology could lead our world into. The main technology they use in the movie is virtual reality, which the government is trying to use to create a super solider. This concept really isn’t to far fetched, and in many ways relates to modern society. Games such as “Call of Duty” put individual players in realistic war situations, with the purpose to kill other people. These games do indeed desensitize individuals to death, and the value of another’s life.
The difference in the movies VR and today’s gaming world is accessibility to the games. In the movie you needed a complex machine and a VR mask to get in to the world. In modern games, you just need the internet. RPG’s and other 2nd life sites have made it possible to make an individual create the character who they’ve always wanted to be. This perfect world makes it hard to face reality; therefore many hours are logged on the games, and sites.
I can speak about these games with some experience. During a brief stint of unemployment, I used a thirty day free trial I received on the “World of Warcraft” RPG site. This game put me in a world where character building and basic survival are essential. A world that makes you feel like you are living off the land a battling with rival groups honestly filled a void that I had been missing during the brief stint. “Lawnmower Man” really made some realistic points, and things like the Ipad have been proven to help young children develop much faster than previous generations. What long term effects this has, we will have to wait to see. Will these children be able to move things with their minds? The future can only tell.

  10. Many current trends in VR or technology can be related to the 1992 movie, The Lawnmower Man. In this film, a mentaly challenged male has the opportunity to boost his brain power through a scientific experiment and become the person whom without the advancement in technology, he could not be. The most significant concept that can relate to the movie is the constant advancements in technology.

With new products coming out almost every minute of every day or new theories being created about the current technology that we presently have, our world thrives on the connection. Today, we have the opportunity to be connected every single second of the day viraly. Students are constantly checking Facebook or Twitter to see new posts made by "friends," known or unknown in the hopes of seeing something interesting or learning something new. The way this technologic advancement relates is that Jobe had the opportunity to use and advancement in the scientific industry to possibly boost his brain power.

In our new and growing generations, we are always going to be looking for that new connection, whether it be socially or virally. And with how the world is already being connected through millions of streams of internet, or virtual world is only going to grow.

  11. In the 1992 film, The Lawnmower Man, virtual reality and the technology scene take center stage as this unknown medium of mystery. It is funny to see the early stages of how technology was made out to be in this film, however, I believe the way that this film portrayed technology shows us plenty of similarities to the way we see and use technology today.

In the film virtual reality was this technological frontier and they were the first to truly be exploring all of its possibilities. I believe the same is true in the way we approach technology today. Sometimes technology is invented and used only to end up possibly serving a different purpose or even perhaps a far greater purpose than even originally intended. Perhaps not to the extreme as portrayed in the film but for a greater purpose nonetheless.

Facebook and Apple technology are just some examples that can be mentioned relating the frontiers and mystery of technology today as virtual reality was in the film. Facebook is a technology that is reshaping the entire landscape of quite literally living life. Apple technology has brought to us things that at one time were only tales of science fiction to life in the palm of your hand.

Current trends and the film, though far apart in actuality, do share some similar characteristics in the concept of exploring unknown technological mediums.

  12. In the movie, The Lawnmower Man, I am pleased with how the technology and the ideas from the 90's are now being done in the 21st century. The technological advances in the movie make way to how the trends are produced today. While can not exactly tap into people's brains and make them "smarter", like Job was made to be, but we do have videogames and other up-to-date pieces that give the same effect as the movie.

Since the 90's, we have obviously advanced tremendously, but we carry out the same ideas that were trying to be made over 20 years ago. With Facebook, Google, and all the other websites, we are able to become a "celebrity" in our own world. People are able to connect with you and relate to your trending ideas via the web now.

In conclusion, everyday there are new technologies being born and put to use day-to-day. The ideas from the past are being put on blast in this century. I am still holding out for the "Jetsons" life!
