Try again: Tell Me Something that I don't know

Tell Me Something that I Don't Know

The Chris Matthews show is a syndicated TV show. One of the segments on it is "Tell Me Something that I Don't Know." Top news reporters from around the country tell Chris their "scoops and predictions" about current or future events. Similiarly, TELL US something that we don't know about technology or cultural/social media.
Keep in mind: this is more of a HOW TO that you demonstrate or present rather than then general news information.

Ideas: What does the # do? What is a QRC? What is RT and why should I care? Useful freeware. Apps to use in school. What are people using in marketing?

  1. Since I am am a Blackberry user, Tweetdeck doesn't work for me. The blackberry equivalent of Tweetdeck is Ubersocial. Ubersocial is a twitter app that allows you to browse your followers, browse who you follow, as well as browse "around you" which is a pretty cool function that takes everyone's tweets that have a location tag within five miles of you and puts them into a live feed. You can also add people you follow into "circles" which are basically lists that allow you to only view those tweets. I personally have an "inner circle" (friends/family) a "news circle" (CNN, Time Mag, AP) and a "celebrity circle" (Ellen, Rainn Wilson, Neil Patrick Harris, etc)

  2. to expand on the "Cram App", users plug in their own information for an upcoming test and the app mixes up the different question/answer pairs into random multiple choice questions. The app also keeps track of progress and grades as well as allows users to share their flash cards with other users. The greatest thing about this is all of the information is right there in users' iPhones or iPods and they can study anywhere without having to keep track of those loose note cards that easily get lost in the bottomless pits of students' backpacks.

  3. SF Park is a new app used in the San Francisco area to aid the public to find parking spaces. The app shows areas of available spaces and even includes changing parking prices. The app updates every 60 seconds and is fueled by sensors planted around the city. San Francisco is the first to use this technology vastly, and the project was first funded by a federal grant from the Department of Transportation. The app is being brought to life in many other busy urban areas such as Los Angeles.

  6. Many people are using more and more apps and using their smartphones. Many businesses are increasing because of something called geolocation technology. Many apps like "FourSquare" and "Google Buzz"(practicalcommerce.com) let others know exactly where you are and what you are doing at the time. Just download one of the apps (which are most likely free) and once you are somewhere you want to share with your friends, it will allow you to check in, post pictures and tips about the place.
Businesses are increasing because others are checking in and leaving positive tips for others to see. In FourSquare, you can also get special deals at food places, clothing places and other things like that.
You can also connect to Facebook and twitter so that your other friends who do not have the app can see these features as well. Businesses are getting their name out there because these check-ins, tips and deals are spilling out into other social networking sites.

  7. A hash mark isn't necessarily used to represent numbers anymore, it is now used for Twitter, a new social networking site that is growing in popularity. When logging on to the website, I see people that I'm following have a status update such as "Just got paid #Money". I automatically assume that "money" is the general subject of what they are talking about. The hash mark that you put before a word in a post on Twitter has the ability to tag the post for that specific word. Users have the option to want to follow "hash-tags" on the page because in doing so, they can get tagged through their hash tag so more users will tend to follow them. Every time a user posts a status with a hash-tag after following the hash-tag app, it will then show up as a real post on that page.
This is important because when using new websites, users tend to get confused on what the new lingo is on the site. Also, using hash-tags gets users correctly using the website.

  8. WordPress is an alternative blogging site that allows you to host your own blog but with features advanced enough to where your blog could transform into it's own free standing website. There are two different ways to be able to use Wordpress. 1.Self-hosting, through self-hosting you own your own domain and host on your own server space, which can be done by using services such as "www.godaddy.com", by doing this you have pretty much full control over every detail of what the blog/site looks like and what it's able to do. 2. WordPress hosting, with hosting held by WordPress all that is required by the user is to simply set up the account, choose a theme, and begin writing, though this way is much less time consuming and easier as it is done entirely through the web browser, it does give less control and customization compared to the self-hosted option. WordPress is a very popular blogging & website utility among notable authors and companies such as, Jon Acuff and CNN's "Political Ticker". The most powerful blogs/sites using WordPress are those that are self hosted, in order to set up a self hosted WordPress blog/site you first need to go to a domain/hosting client that allow you to buy both domains and server space, such as "www.godaddy.com", once you have purchased the adequate amount of server space for your site/blog, you then download WordPress's system files to your computer and then set them up through an FTP site, within this FTP is where all of the customization and site theme happens. Once everything is customized and set up through the FTP you are then free to blog away by simply logging into a back end website of WordPress and do all of your writing through the back end as well as be able to monitor site traffic, blog feedback, etc.

  10. Our phones are containing more vital things involving our lives every day. Business owners often have important information saved on their phones and need to make plenty of calls. The problem is, our phones go everywhere with us! We continually drop them and put them in risky positions which can result in a broken phone, lost information, and a broken wallet. Wouldn't it be nice if our phones could watch out for themselves? Jeff Bezos has designed smart phone air bags. Your phone uses its camera and sensory spots to determine if it is falling and actually deploys airbags before impact. He is even considering installing thrusters on the phone to spin it to land on the air bags evenly or hover above the ground without ever meeting impact. Now that is a smart phone! You can check out the designs in Popsci.com in the gadgets section.

  12. "Spin Sucks"- this is a website for for PR professionals who are daring to take back their reputation. More often than not, PR reps get a bad rap or "reputation" for whom they are representing. The website was founded by Arment Dietrich and is available to other guest bloggers who wish to join in the "fight against destructive spins". www.spinsucks.com One example that the website addresses is "Astroturfing"-according to Urban Dictionary it is "the act of boosting one's image on-line with fake comments, paid-for-reviews, made-up claims, and testimonials. (The GOP, Palin and Cheney- are examples of astroturfing)

  13. One thing that has always fascinated the television/movie viewing generation is the ability to see the images on the screen coming at you. I'm talking about seeing a movie in 3-D or 3 Dimensional meaning the images go farther than just the screen. The only problem were those pesky glasses. However, Toshiba has recently came out with the 55 inch ZL2 which allows you to have the 3-D experience without the theater or the glasses. How does it work? To begin, there is a device on the tv called the parallax autostereo which deploys an opaque see-through barrier over the screen. Your eyes view the barrier at a slightly different angle than a regular tv, and therefore the pixels appear differently behind it causing a 3-D effect.

  16. If you have ever wanted to see the world, but didn’t think you could afford everything that goes a long with traveling, your time is now. Hotels can now be a thing of the past with websites like http://www.couchsurfing.org/ . This site is a free travel networking site that helps you meet people who can give you a couch to crash on, and even be your own personal travel guide. I have a friend that used this site, so he could see New York City. The person he was connected with, took him on a bike tour of NYC, and showed him the way the locals live. Don’t let a price keep you from seeing the world anymore, use this technology and get out there.
