  1. Viral is when something spreads quickly over a short period of time. Most people would think of a virus when the word viral is said but anything that spreads quickly could be consider viral.
In the internet and new media world social networks could be considered viral because they came in over nite and spread like wild fire and in a short period of time such sites would be Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and Youtube to name a few.
A negative example of something going viral is the campaign for Old Spice. They came out with commericals that were targeting a younger consumer but the product was still being made for the original an older mature consumer so the campaign ended up not working being a killer viral strategy.
A positive example of something going viral is a small business that is looking to find more consumers for their product such as companies that advertise on websites that have their target consumer in mind. The clothing store Motherhood could advertise their business on the website Parenthood.com where a lot of pregnant women may frequent during their pregnacy.

  2. Viral videos are shared via internet. Viral videos became popular due to e-mail sharing, and hosting sites such as YouTube have made viral video sharing a household occurence. The large availability of portable video recording devices allows people to shoot video at any time, and the ability to instantly upload digital videos to the internet has helped propel viral videos' popularity.

Although many viral videos are amateur made, news media, politicians, and Hollywood have seized the opporunity to jump on the viral video bandwagon. During the 2008 presidential election, YouTube partnered with CNN to host the CNN-YouTube presidential debates. YouTube users were encouraged to submit video questions to participating candidates. Anderson Cooper served as the debate moderator, and many felt the debate was more direct and more efficient than its televised counterpart.

Viral videos have been a hot topic in regard to cyber-bullying. In 2006, Ghyslain Raza filed a lawsuit against three former classmates who posted a private video of Raza weilding an imaginary light saber. The video, commonly known as "Star Wars Kid," caused Raza to be subjected to bullying from his peers.

Viral videos are seemingly a permanent fixture in today's internet community.

  3. In my own words, something VIRAL is anything that spreads very quickly. Videos and any news that is uploaded spreads like wildfire. Once something is posted on the internet or television, the word of mouth carries it and the news becomes VIRAL. Word of mouth is a huge part of how businesses, merchandise, and groups grow in popularity. So in this sense, media going viral can increase popularity, income, and makes it better for businesses. However, when a video is uploaded to Youtube of someone being beaten up or abused, this could be a negative way of the media going viral. When a product is being downgraded on the news or internet, this makes business go down for this product, becoming a virus to the people.

  4. When something is viral it is hip, it is hop, and it doesn't stop. Viral is the new big thing that everyone is talking about. Whether its good or bad. When Youtube came out it was viral. Everyone was uploading pretty much anything thats ever been captured on a camera. Every day people were talking about a video they saw on Youtube and the person they told, told someone else and so on and so forth. That is what viral is.

Positive: The videos of the kid lipsyncing popular songs. The kid has an illness which deforms his appearance and through his videos' popularity he is recognized and supported by big time artists(50 cent, David Guetta).

Negative: As much as I like the show, South Park was/is very viral. This show is the seed of many steretypes and crule jokes towards many different kinds of people.

  5. Viral in the internet world compared to the real world is actually a good thing. What it means is that it's the hottest item, video, picture, article, etc., on the internet. Unfortunately, even though going viral on the internet means its a phenomenon and is highly popular, doesn't always means it's appropriate. Going Viral on the internet has it's postives and negatives.

For example, a postive outcome of a viral video, such as the little girl who is obsessed with Justin Beiber makes me laugh because she's so upset over a popstar. Yet on the negative side of that, it's a little girl crying & I'm laughing about it. Going viral on the internet is just another term for being popular.

  6. My definition of going viral is to spread quickly.
An example of something bad going viral could be Christina Aguilera’s performance at the Super Bowl when she botched the lyrics of the National Anthem. Within minutes it was everywhere.

An example of something good was the guy, Jonathan Barnes, who was dancing at the half-time show at High Point University in North Carolina. He danced his way to the Ellen Show for his 15 minutes of fame. Who know where this guy could go from here.

  7. The term "Viral" is used to describe when a video or event goes public. When things go "Viral" they tend to be relevant worldwide. A positive example of something going "Viral" is the story of Jason McElwain. In 2006 he made headlines, because on one February night Jason went from a student basketball assistant to instant star as he went insane on the hardwood. He ended up making all of his shots, but the most remarkable thing about the story was that he was autistic. By his story going "Viral" he showcased that not even physical barriers can trump a person's perseverance to succeed. A negative of something going "Viral" would be Lady Gaga's music.

  9. Videos are "viral" when they are when they receive an astronomically large number of view or hits. These videos are usually very humorous, and have the potential to create celebrities instantly. Viral videos can be considered positive or negative depending on your perspective. One of my favorite shows on television is Tosh.0. The show is hosted by comedian Daniel Tosh, who shows viral videos and then gives his commentary. These videos are usually of people in very embarassing situations. The videos can be considered positive because they are entertaining, but they can also be negative because they are embarassing and people in the videos are subject to bullying online. Here the popular viral video "David after Dentist" followed by Tosh's take on it.

  10. When something goes viral in the new it spreads like the plague. This can have negative influences or positive influences to individuals or an entire mass of people.
Take the Super Bowl/Christina Aguilera fiasco for example. Mrs. Aguilera was scheduled to sing the national anthem before the game. In either a fit or nerves or ill preparedness she forgot the words and never managed to recover. People all over the U.S. have been in an uproar over the whole ordeal, accusing her of being unpatriotic. Conan even took a good stab at her. What can we say? We are a nation of critics.
Then there is the common topic of the flu virus. Haha. This is viral in it's self. Because of technology people have been able to connect and speak out against the ever changing flu virus. This has put pressure on researchers to find a universal cure. Ultimately, this could have a positive influence for everyone.

  11. Deep down we all know what a Viral Video is. It is a video that is uploaded to the web that becomes a hit.

Most of us have seen videos like, "Charlie Bit My Finger Again" which is currently up to 280 Million Views on YouTube (Rivaling the population of the United States).

These videos are hip, and they're just fun to watch. My personal favorite section of Viral Videos are the meltdown section.

The video of Andrew Meyers getting tased at a meeting of John Kerry's was a classic. That viral video became so huge that the phrase, "Don't Taze Me Bro!" became an instant sensation...

My personal favorite meltdown viral video is below:
